NII’s Echizen Laboratory and Media Bias Group Strengthen Collaboration on Trustworthy AI and Media Analysis

Tokyo, May 18, 2025 — The Echizen Laboratory at the National Institute of Informatics (NII), Japan, and the Media Bias Group (media-bias-research.org) are expanding their research collaboration in the areas of artificial intelligence, media bias analysis, and bias awareness.

Over the past year, the Media Bias Group has been hosted at NII, supported in part by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), in particular, the IFI program. During this period, a growing team of researchers, including postdoctoral fellows, doctoral researchers, and master’s student,s has established a sustained on-site presence at NII.

The collaboration combines Echizen Laboratory’s expertise in multimedia security, AI robustness, and trustworthy information systems with the Media Bias Group’s work on large-scale computational analysis of media bias and cross-cultural information dynamics. Together, the teams aim to advance the methodological foundations for evaluating bias in digital media ecosystems and to strengthen the reliability and accountability of AI-driven information systems.

This partnership reflects a broader commitment to international and interdisciplinary research cooperation, especially between Japan and Germany, but also to other international partners. By leveraging complementary funding sources and research infrastructures, the collaboration supports sustained joint projects, researcher exchange, and coordinated supervision of doctoral and postdoctoral researchers.

As part of the collaboration, the partners jointly offer PhD and postdoctoral research opportunities in areas including AI robustness, media bias analysis, and bias awareness. Further information on current openings is available at media-bias-research.org.

The partners plan to deepen their cooperation through joint publications, international workshops, and collaborative research initiatives. The collaboration also welcomes engagement with academic and industry partners interested in bias-related research and trustworthy AI
